Dr. Debra Burns
Dr. Debra Burns has been a music therapist for twenty years. She graduated from Illinois State University in 1993 with a Masters in Music and a Music Therapy Equivalency. She received a PhD in Music Education and Music Therapy from the University of Kansas in 1999. Prior to joining the faculty at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis in 2004, Dr. Burns completed postdoctoral research fellowships funded by the Walther Cancer Foundation and the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Her research training focused on alleviating symptoms distress and improving the quality of life of cancer patients in active treatment. She maintains an active research program exploring the various benefits of music therapy for cancer patients. She has presented nationally and internationally on these topics. Dr. Burns is the coordinator of Music Therapy education programs at the Department of Music and Arts Technology at the School of Engineering and Technology on the IUPUI campus. Fred Shaffer, PhD
Fred Shaffer, PhD, is a professor of Psychology and former Department
Chair at Truman State University, where he has taught since 1975. He
completed a MS in Clinical Psychology (1973) and a PhD in
Social-Personality Psychology from Oklahoma State University (1975). His
specialty area is Applied Psychophysiology and has served as Director of
Truman’s Applied Psychophysiology research program since 1977. He is a
Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA) Senior Fellow and
a member of its Executive Committee. He has served on the Association of
Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) Board and as its

Jane Guiltinan, N.D.
Dr. Jane Guiltinan has been a practicing naturopathic physician for
over twenty years. She graduated from Bastyr University in 1986. She
completed two years of residency training at Bastyr, and is currently a
clinical professor there. She was the Medical Director of Bastyr’s
teaching clinic from 1992 until 1998, and Dean of Clinical Affairs at
Bastyr from 1998 until 2003. She was the co-medical director for the
King County Natural Medicine Clinic, the first publicly funded
integrated health clinic in the United States. Dr. Guiltinan was the
Medical Director on the Healing AIDS Research Project, and co-author of
the paper that was published in The Journal of Naturopathic Medicine in
1992. She was the principal investigator for another clinical trial in
AIDS research at Bastyr, and has been involved in research on
naturopathic treatments for fibroid tumors in women. She participated on
an NIH grant awarded to the Group Health Center for Health Studies in a
clinical trial of alternative treatments for menopause. Results from
that trial have been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. She
has presented to both professional and public conferences
internationally, including a presentation to a subcommittee of the
British Parliament. She shared the Blackmore International Award for
Outstanding Research in Natural Medicine in 1990. She was awarded the
1995 Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic
Physicians. In October of 1998 she was appointed to the Board of
Trustees of Harborview Medical Center, and is currently serving a third
term on that Board. She was elected to the American Association of
Naturopathic Physicians Board of Directors in August of 2002, served as
President in 2006 and 2007, and is currently Immediate Past President.

Robert Rickover
Robert Rickover graduated from the School of Alexander Studies in
London, England in 1981 where he also served on the faculty. He studied

Swami Sadashiva Tirtha, D.Sc. is the author of the Ayurveda
