Somatic (referring to the body) Therapy is a holistic treatment approach that integrates the mind, body and spiritual aspects of healing into one whole. Somatic Therapy is said to help us become more aware of our bodies and our experiences and sensations. Somatic Therapy often focuses on breathing and stresses of the day in order to let our awareness stop the factors that hold us back in daily life. For example, if we concentrate on the places in our bodies which are sore or uncomfortable – like pain in our stomach, shoulders or neck, for example – it is believed that this increased mental focus allows us to recognize this discomfort and therefore we can help relieve it or stop it by just paying attention.
