Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been rising in the past twenty years. The official rate of ASD in 2012 was 1 in 88 children. Recent studies on ASD have pointed to a direction of autoimmune response and parents with allergies and autoimmune diseases would more likely have ASD child. Biomedical and holistic treatment for ASD has also been explored and the common agreement for ASD treatment is to treat the child as early as possible, even before they can be diagnosed as ASD. The result of treating a 2-3 years old and 7-8 years old can be significantly different. Thus, recognizing early signs of possible autism is crucial to make a decision what to do for this kid.

The first sign of possible autism is the dysfunction of immune system. The kid shows many types of sensitivities, including food intolerance, indigestion, loos stool or constipation, frequent ear, sinus and respiratory infections, skin irritation etc. The child is always cranky, disturbance in sleep and colicky. Neurological developmental delay usually is not seen until age between 2 and 3. The signs include not responding to sound, not paying attention to adultâ??s interaction, no direct eye contact, no intention to speak or imitate adultsâ?? word. Besides, other signs of possible autism or neurological delay include shouting, repeated body movements, toe walking, obsessive and compulsive behaviors. If you see any of the above signs, contact a healthcare professional specializing in autism treatment for help. Remember that regular pediatrician may not be familiar with early signs of autism. Waiting and hoping the nervous system would develop in the future only reduce the chance for your childâ??s completely recovery. Getting early treatment doesnâ??t hurt the child but only help him develop naturally.

Many people suffer from frequent sinus infections (or ear infections for children), with symptoms of running nose, postnasal drip, headache, or cough. If the mucus discharge turns to yellow or green, antibiotic may have to be used. This process often reoccur every couple of months. Common understanding for the cause of this condition is environmental allergies, viral and bacterial infections. However, from my own clinical experience, gut problem is sometimes the root issue for this condition.

The mouth, sinus and nose cavities are direct extensions of the digestive tract. A problematic digestive system always causes inflammation in the mucus membrane of sinus, nose and mouth. Common digestive problem is called dysbiosis that refers to a condition with microbial imbalances such as yeast overgrowth (Candidiasis) and the decline of the beneficial bacteria. The dysbiosis of digestive tract often leads to the dysbiosis of the sinus and ear cavity and causes inflammation of the mucus membrane, which in turn results in the blockage of the drainage ducts, fluid retention in the sinus and ear cavities and bacterial infection later on. Many people with frequent sinus and ear infections also have symptoms of the dysbiosis of digestive tract such as food indigestion, bloating, loose stool or constipation. Thus, treating digestive dysbiosis should be the main objective for treating frequent sinus and ear infections.

First of all, dietary change is necessary to maintain a healthy gut. Popular American diet contains too much sugar and refined carbohydrate. The food may include sugary drink, candy, chocolate, ice cream, cake, cookie, bagel, bread, pizza, pasta, breakfast cereal, pancake, waffle and chips etc. Everything containing sugar or converting to sugar quickly inside the body will overload the system and feed intestinal yeast population such as Candida, which produces mycotoxins and triggers a series of pathophysiological responses. Research shows that Candida overgrowth leads to cortisol raising, low thyroid function, depression, sugar craving and a variety of inflammatory reactions. Candida overgrowth also drives away healthy bacteria and further weakens immune functions in the gut. Candida induced inflammation is one of the major causes for frequent sinus and ear infections. Antibiotics often suppress bacterial infection but promote Candidia outbreak and lead the body to a vicious cycle of frequent reoccurred infections.

In addition to healthy eating, intestinal cleansing and detoxifying Candida, bad bacteria and parasites are necessary to stop the vicious cycle of reoccurred infections. Many natural supplements can be used to cleanse and detox the gut. However, I recommend people with long-term digestive issues seek help from healthcare professionals who have experiences dealing with chronic digestive conditions. Many people who tried to cleanse and detox themselves felt detox response afterwards, showing headache, body ache, fatigue and depression. A preparation of the body including liver support prior to the detox and cleanse program can usually prevent detox response successfully.

Another important factor for frequent sinus and ear infection is allergy and sensitivity, including environmental and chemical sensitivities, food intolerance and allergies. Taking an antihistamine medication can successfully reduce clinical symptoms for a short time, but wonâ??t resolve the root issues for the sensitivity and allergy. There have been well-developed theories and natural therapies dealing with allergy and sensitivity. The therapies may include allergy desensitization, detoxification and adrenal support etc. Treating allergy and sensitivity the right way maintains a healthy balance of your body and prevents allergy and sensitivity getting deeper and developing into asthma and autoimmune diseases in the future.

Our eight-year-old son was always a fussy child when he was younger.  At the age of five, we realized he had gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy) sensitivities.  His mood, behavior and attention improved greatly after we started him on the gluten-free, casein-free diet.  After two years, however, he still had a lot of attention issues and some anger issues, at school and at home.  It was after some research, we begin to suspect the link between his ADD and Genetically Modified foods.  Since most conventional foods found in the supermarket and many gluten-free and casein-free foods are made of conventional corn and soy, they are Genetically Modified (except those marked as organic).  Since the purpose of genetically modifying foods is to produce toxin for the crops to survive various problems that affect their growth, perhaps these foods would leave extra toxin in our body?  It is after that we started to read labels more carefully, and replaced foods that are mostly genetically modified with organic ones.  After just two months our sonâ??s attention and behavior had improved greatly.  He can now read a Berenstain Bears chapter book without getting up many times in between.  He is happier and more relaxed.  His attention is definitely getting better and tamper tantrums became a rare occurrence.

There is also statistics showing pigs and cows that are feed with genetically modified corn and soy have 45-45% more chance of miscarry their young.

While it is optimal to eat only organic foods, those who cannot afford can try to avoid the following genetically modified foods:

Corn and sweet corn

(Corn syrup of any kind except organic)

Soy

Canola oil (non organic)

Tomato

Potato

Sugar beets

Hawaiian papaya

Rice (grown in the United States)

Commercial milk (producers inject dairy cattle with recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone or rBGH, which is a genetically modified hormone created to increase each cow's milk production)

If you had realized that you are a HSP, or Highly Sensitive Person, then you know while your mind is brilliant, your body is very sensitive to stress.  Stress from difficult people around you, stress from work, and stress from family life as well as children's homework and after school activities.  You may also realize that all these stress factors can lead to sleeplessness.  But did you know that the sleeplessness can cause leaky gut, severe environmental and food allergies, liver detoxification function being blocked, autoimmune disorders and even cancer?  Here is how that can all happen.

Our body sheds and regenerates our intestinal lining every 48 hours.  The growth hormone that helps your body to re-grow the intestinal lining is produced by the pituitary gland.  When you are stressed, it stresses your pituitary gland and prevent it from producing the vital growth hormone that help regeneration of your intestinal lining.  So the new lining would have holes on them.  When you eat, food particles go through these holes and into your blood stream.  Your immune system now sees that there are foreign objects in the flood so it attacks these particles, thus resulting in an allergic reaction.  As time goes by the immune system gets busier and busier, eventually leading to more serious conditions such as Lupus, MS, and other autoimmune disorders.  A busy immune system could not do much to cancer cells because it is busy attacking things it not supposed to attack.

I was often asked the question by my patients, why do we all have leaky guts?  The answer, as I explained above, lies in the busy and stressed lives.  Many parents are pulled to different directions by their jobs and families.  Different kids have different activities, so other than work and daily household work, parents are constantly on the go, always stressed out.  This is very dangerous to the Highly Sensitive People because we can be affected by stress much more than the population of normal folks.  The answer?  De-stress and Slow-down!  Limit your kids activities and have more regular sit-down family dinners and family time.  After all, what makes children are what they learned from their families, more so than what they learned in school and from sports fields.  I understand parents want to give their children all the opportunities in life, in order for them to succeed in life.  However, no children will be happy if their parents are not healthy and happy.  Your health and happiness are the best gift you can give to your children!  Moreover, since Highly Sensitive People like us often have Highly Sensitive Children, it is important for you to demonstrate how to take care of the Highly Sensitive Body, so they avoid the pitfall of a highly stressed lifestyle.  So Slow Down, Eat Well, Simplify Your Life, and Sleep No Less Than Eight Hours a day as a Highly Sensitive Person. I hope this article can save many lives as I have seen enough of serious health issues happen to Highly Sensitive People.

I will be giving a talk in the AutismOne conference in Chicago, May 29th, 2011. Here is the abstract:

Autism affects three major systems, nervous, digestive and immune system. Biomedical approach addresses nervous and digestive issues well, but lack of effective therapy to help immune malfunction such as allergy and hidden infections (Lyme disease and PANDAS), which have to be addressed for those who don’t respond to biomedical treatment. This talk introduces an alternative approach to the immune malfunction with energy medicine, which is complementary to biomedical treatment for autism.

Current Research on Pulsed Electromagnetic Field

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) has become a popular therapy for many chronic disorders. PEMF accesses biological system through electromagnetic frequencies, which is totally different from conventional chemistry-based methodology. This article is trying to review recent clinical and laboratory research on PEMF and discuss its clinical application and its potential to treat Lyme disease and chronic infections.

PEMF delivers electromagnetic signals to the body stimulating cellular functions. It has been commonly used in the field of orthopedics for the treatment of non-union fractures and failed fusions [1-4]. Laboratory research indicated that PEMF suppresses bone loss [5] through promoting TGF-beta1 and inhibiting IL-6 [6], promoting tissue regeneration [7], enhancing early cell proliferation in osteogenesis [8], and signaling osteogenic differentiation and mineralization [9]. PEMF has also been reported to help osteoarthritis [10] and proposed to be a viable alternative therapy for the disease [11]. Animal research indicated that PEMF had significant efficacy in reducing cartilage damage for osteoarthritis [12], helped healing of the cartilage defect [13], and had positive effect on viability of human chondrocytes in vitro [14].

In addition to its effect on orthopedics, PEMF has also been reported to accelerate wound healing for both animal [15, 16] and human [17], and regenerate nerve tissue [18-20]. It helps to reduce post operational pain [21, 22], chronic musculoskeletal pain [23], pain from carpal tunnel syndrome [24] and diabetic polyneuropathy [19]. It may improve function, pain and fatigue from fibromyalgia [25],  help patients with treatment-resistant depression [26], and reduce symptoms from multiple sclerosis [27]. The possible mechanisms for tissue regeneration and pain management has been suggested as provoking a decrease in the production of inflammatory-type cytokines (IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha) and an increase in cytokines of lymphocytic origin (IL-10) [28].

Because of its safe nature, PEMF has a long history of clinical practice. The most controversial figure in PEMF practice is an American named Royal Rife. He believed that each microorganism has its own Mortal Oscillatory Rate (MOR). In early 1930s he published his research and claimed that his Rife Machine, a PEMF device, destroyed microbial with specific electromagnetic frequencies and helped various cancer patients through inactivating the pathogenic virus called BX factor [29]. Although up till now Rife’s research has not been reproduced, some recent publications have suggested that Rife’s claim may not be entirely impossible. Food industry uses pulsed-electric field to control microbial growth and preserve apple juice [30-32], grape juice [33], wine [34], milk [35] and beer [36]. It suggests that pulsed-electric field inactivate yeast and bacteria including Lactobacillus diolivorans [31], Pediococcus parvulus [31], Salmonella enterica [32], Bacillus cereus [35], Dekkera anomala, Dekkera bruxellensis, Lactobacilus hilgardii, Lactobacillus plantarum [34], Kloeckera apiculata, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Gluconobacter oxydans [33]. Although the frequency, intensity and delivery method of the treatment in food industry is different from those used by Rife, the nature of the treatment, pulsed electromagnetic field, remains the same. It is likely to develop therapeutic devices to resolve bacteria, virus, yeast and parasite infections in human body. Most cancer research using PEMF have been done using cancer cell lines. It suggests that PEMF induce apoptosis of melanoma [37], colon carcinoma [38], liver cancer [39] and ovarian carcinoma cell lines [40]. Although the mechanism suggested by above cancer research is different from what Rife proposed, it is still promising to see positive response from cancer cell line research with PEMF. More clinical research is needed to explore this area.

Lyme Disease and Chronic Infections

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne bacterial infection in temperate areas of the northern hemisphere. The bacteria are called Borrelia burgdorferi. Recently the reported incidence of Lyme disease has increased markedly in many countries [41]. Approximately 20,000 cased of Lyme disease are reported annually in the United States alone [42]. Typical Lyme disease may have three stages: 1) early localized infection with erythema migrans (a characteristic skin rash that looks like a bull’s-eye), fever, feeling unwell, fatigue, headache, muscle pain and joint pain; 2) early disseminated infection (occurring days to weeks later) with neurological, musculoskeletal, or cardiovascular symptoms; and 3) late disseminated information with intermittent swelling and pain of one or more joints, neuropathy or encephalopathy [42]. There is evidence that oral antibiotic doxycycline helps Borrelia infection [42]. However, some Lyme patients have been reported to be antibiotic resistant [43]. More and more of these patients have been diagnosed as chronic Lyme disease. Patients with chronic Lyme disease are those who have the Lyme symptoms but lack of the initial stage of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, or those who have been previously treated for Lyme disease but had continuing or relapsing nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and cognitive complaints. The latter group should be classified as Post-Lyme disease Syndrome (PLS) [44] and antibiotic has been reported to have no impact on this group of patients [45-48].

Typical PLS contains persistent fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and neurocognitive impairment, which are also shown from other commonly diagnosed chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. It suggested that fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue is probably induced by Lyme disease and should be classified into PLS instead [49]. MS is another commonly diagnosed neurological autoimmune condition. Studies suggested that viral infection especially Epstein-Barr infection [50, 51], a common co-infection of Lyme disease, and bacteria infection especially Borrelia burgdorferi infection [52, 53], may play a role in etiology of MS. Laboratory study demonstrated that PLS serum antibody binds cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems and an autoimmune response in PLS has been suggested [54]. It indicated that MS and PLS may have similar etiopathogenesis.

Because of the difficulties to treat chronic Lyme disease and PLS, complementary and alternative medical therapies such as herbal medicine and nutritional supplements have been widely used to treat this condition [55]. Many clinicians who specialize in Lyme disease reported success in treating Lyme disease with alternative therapies such as PEMF [56]. With its effect on tissue regeneration, pain relief, anti-inflammation and anti-microbial, PEMF has potential to become an effective therapy for Lyme disease, MS, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, arthritis and many other chronic conditions.
