Sex and Body Image

by Alina Frank and Dr. Craig Weinston, DC

Imagine being a kid again. The pleasures would include the joy and pleasure of living fully in your senses, the wild abandon that you feel being completely in the moment, the thrill of being in your body with no concern of how you look. How you look can be of great consternation and worry. It can also affect your sex life.

Many studies point to the connection between self image and sexuality. In our experience this can actually lead to sexual dysfunction. What you feel about your body determines whether you will be free, open, vulnerable, and uninhibited which are all necessary for great sex.

The more you heal the self loathing of your body, the more you will shift your relationship with your sexual self. When you are trapped by media stereotypes or past negative experiences of having your appearance critiqued, it will show up in bed. With images throughout the media and our culture’s perception of beauty (whether we like to admit it or not) we are influenced. If you happen to have been raised in a family that was judgmental about your appearance this is also likely to have been taken in on some level. These voices in your head from your past and the voices of a distorted view of what a woman’s body should look like make it challenging for acceptance of what is.

One very effective tool in conquering negative self destructive thoughts is Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT®. One particularly enlightening way to use it would be to stand in front of a mirror naked. All your inner voices about your body will bubble up to the surface for you to work on them. Releasing these painful feelings is the key to self acceptance. With self-acceptance comes a willingness to be that frolicking free spirit again. Your body will be grateful for your love and will reward you with pleasure beyond your wildest dreams.
